| After successfully organizing volunteer missions that focused on helping communities, we have decided that we can do much more to help very poor communities in Cusco. For this reason, we have adopted the Town of Huarocondo, located 45 minutes from Cuzco, Peru. This social experience is a great chance to see Peru and Cuzco and at the same time experience the benefits of a true volunteer mission. Huarocondo is a poor Andean town in desperate need of multiple layers of infrastructure assistance.
The Volunteer Peru Foundation is supporting and has been in constant communication with a community in chincha. The brunt of the destruction has been to the South of Lima in towns such as Canete, Chincha and Ica. These areas are mostly destroyed and without any basic services. As you may have seen on the news many people have lost their homes in that area in the aftermath of the quake and are currently living in the fields with their families. The families in the community (about 100 families) we are helping are living in a campsite on a farm and or the street because their houses are inhospitable . They need food, water and items such as medicine and blankets to help them survive the weeks and months ahead. All of them are sharing basic services and cooking and cleaning together.
